About Anne
Hi, from sunny South Australia, thanks for dropping in on my website. My name is Anne Rogers and here's a bit about myself. I am a South Australian speculative fiction author, mostly science fiction with some fantasy and magic mixed in for good measure. I was born in England in 1946 and came to Australia in 1983 and lived in the suburbs of Adelaide. I have lived in rural S.A. surrounded by sheep since 1997. I really like it here it is so peaceful compared to the city. I have three cats, one old boy Misty who is 19 this month, he is a shorthaired silver mackerel tabby. And two youngsters that I got from a rescue centre, Eddy 1yr a longhaired bronze mackerel tabby, and Charlie 1.5 yrs a shorthaired white and orange Manx (no tail). See their pictures at the bottom of the page.
I started writing way back in 1960 when I was 14 years old and still in school, and have been writing on and off ever since, I'll be 73 in January. The first book I wrote was a pre-teen/early-teen Cozy style (no adult themes, bad language, explicit violence) novel called The Magic Rainbow. Book One: Escape to Amorica, science fiction/magic. I used to write in school during classes and I got detention for inattention. Then my English teacher discovered what I was doing and she encouraged me. She also told the other teachers not to give me detention anymore which was a big relief. I kept in touch with her when I left school, I used to go around to see her and show her how my writing was getting on. The story starts with Merlin as a 12 year old and his two friends from the future Tina Robinson 14, and her brother Paul 12, and the adventures they go on with the rainbow. I sent it to all the publishers I could but the only one who showed any interest was Penguin. One of their editors read it and sent me a long letter telling me that if I could get a hardback publisher they would be interested in doing a 2nd edition in softback. The editor explained that they didn't do 1st editions in softback. Sadly, I never got a hardback publisher. I had to wait until 2008 before I got it published on www.lulu.com as an indie author. If you are an aspiring author Lulu is a great place to start. Their staff are friendly and helpful and publishing is free.
It wasn't the first book I published on lulu, the first one was a novella called Mission 14, science fiction published in 2004, I'm planning to expand it into a novel. The next one to get published was River Crossing also science fiction, another novella which I would like to turn into a novel some day. Then I published the two short stories I had written, Renewal which is about reincarnation, and The Fatal Planet a science fiction. Then it was The Magic Rainbow's turn at last to be published in 2008, 46 years after the first book was completed. The next Magic Rainbow. Book Two: Race Around the Sun, to be published was written between the age of 16 and 20. In 2015 I started rewriting and editing it ready for publication in December 2017. I want to make this a continuing series now, at least until the teenagers in it become adults. I might even carry on with them as young adults, I'll have to see how it turns out.
Later I published Golden Horse which is the fictionalised novel of one of my horses that I bred and competed on in Horse Trials in England, it also includes the other horses I competed on as well. The only way to describe that horses life would be colourful. I also published a book about weightloss and a healthy lifestyle called No More Diets. I have also written and illustrated three children's books for 3 year olds and upwards learning to read. Sooty Wooty is a Cat, Prince and the Apple Tree, and Captain Dan and Sailor Sam. Fully illustrated by me, in bright bold colours.
At the begining of 2018 I wrote a short story called Red Sands about an experiment to create hybrid humans who can live on the Earth after an atomic war devestates the planet and it becomes uninhabitable by ordinary humans. It is set in the Australian outback near Alice Springs. It will be in an anthology I'm hoping to create. I have several other short stories in the works.
In August I started writing the first in a series of Cozy Cat Paranormal Murder Mysteries, called Penny Cat Detective; Book 0: The Murder of Mrs Ethel Law. Wish me luck with it, it has been slow going I had a blank spot for a while with nothing coming to me, but I'm over that writing hump now and getting on with it steadily, a bit each day. Writing for me is a hobby, I'm not one of those writers that write to a deadline with copius outlining and huge word counts to achieve each day. I write as much as I feel like, when I feel like it, and fly by the seat of my pants (I'm a Pantza). This will be a series of novels, the first one is a novella and will be a free introduction to the series.
I'm always happy to hear from my readers so feel free to drop me a line here.
